On this day, January 12, 1981, Dynasty, one of television’s most iconic primetime soap operas, premiered on ABC. Created by Richard and Esther Shapiro, the series followed the dramatic lives of the wealthy Carrington family, led by oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) and his wife Krystle (Linda Evans). The show was known for its over-the-top glamour, explosive rivalries, and dramatic cliffhangers.

Over nine seasons and 229 episodes, Dynasty became a cultural phenomenon, peaking as the #1 show in America in 1985. Joan Collins’ role as the scheming Alexis Carrington added an unforgettable layer of drama, making her one of the most iconic characters in TV history.

Fun Fact: The elaborate costumes on Dynasty were so popular that they inspired a women’s clothing line called “The Dynasty Collection” by the show’s designer, Nolan Miller, bringing the series’ signature style to fans everywhere.

Did you watch Dynasty during its original run? Who was your favorite character, and how do you think it compares to other primetime soaps of the 80s?
