On this day, January 12, 1981, Blondie released the groundbreaking single Rapture, which became the first rap-influenced song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. A standout track from their fifth studio album, Autoamerican, Rapture topped the charts from March 28 to April 10, 1981, showcasing Blondie’s ability to blend genres and push musical boundaries.

With its funky bassline, disco influences, and Debbie Harry’s iconic rap verse, Rapture bridged the worlds of punk, disco, and hip-hop, helping to introduce rap music to a wider audience. The accompanying music video, featuring Fab 5 Freddy and graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (uncredited), further cemented the song’s place in music history.

Fun Fact: Rapture was the first music video featuring rap to air on MTV, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of hip-hop as a mainstream genre.

What’s your favorite Blondie song? How do you think Rapture influenced the fusion of rap and pop music in the 80s?
