On this day, January 10, 1980, the final episode of The Rockford Files aired, concluding its six-season run on NBC. Created by Roy Huggins and Stephen J. Cannell, the series starred James Garner as Jim Rockford, a wisecracking private investigator who solved cases with charm, wit, and occasional reluctance.

Over its 123 episodes and six seasons, The Rockford Files became one of television’s most beloved detective shows. Its mix of humor, action, and gritty realism set it apart from other shows in the genre. Garner’s portrayal of the resourceful but down-to-earth Rockford earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in 1977 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Although the series ended in 1980, fans were treated to eight made-for-TV movies between 1994 and 1999, allowing Rockford to make a memorable comeback.

Fun Fact: The iconic theme song, composed by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, became a hit in its own right, reaching #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.
