On this day, December 22, 1984, Bernhard Goetz shot four teenagers on a Manhattan express train after they allegedly tried to mug him. The incident gained national attention, and Goetz was dubbed the “Subway Vigilante.”

The case sparked intense debate over self-defense, crime, and race in America. While Goetz was acquitted of attempted murder charges, he was convicted of illegal firearm possession and served eight months in jail.
