On this day, December 16, 1989, Appeals Court Judge Robert Smith Vance was tragically assassinated by a mail bomb sent to his home in Birmingham, Alabama. The bomb, which also injured his wife, was sent by Walter Leroy Moody, Jr., a man with a history of legal disputes and a vendetta against the judicial system.

In addition to Judge Vance’s murder, Moody was also charged with the killing of civil rights activist Robert E. Robinson in Savannah, Georgia, through a separate mail bomb. The cases highlighted the dangers of domestic terrorism and led to significant changes in how the U.S. Postal Service screens suspicious packages. Moody was later convicted and executed in 2018.
