On this day, December 14, 1984, the acclaimed film A Passage to India premiered in theaters. Directed by David Lean and based on E.M. Forster’s novel, the film starred Judy Davis, James Fox, Alec Guinness, and Peggy Ashcroft.

The story, set during the British colonial era in India, explores themes of cultural clash, prejudice, and justice. Peggy Ashcroft’s brilliant portrayal of Mrs. Moore earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, while the film received several other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
