On this day May 25, 1988, Rambo III premiered in theaters with Sylvester Stallone returning as the iconic John Rambo in one of the most explosive action films of the decade. Directed by Peter MacDonald, the film took Rambo to Afghanistan where he launched a one man rescue mission to save his former commander from Soviet forces.

With its intense action sequences, large scale battles, and high budget set pieces, Rambo III pushed the boundaries of 80s action filmmaking. It was one of the most expensive movies ever made at the time with a budget of 63 million dollars. The film earned 53 million at the domestic box office and a total of 189 million worldwide.
