On This Day: May 23, 1984 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Premiered in Theaters
On this day May 23, 1984, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom premiered in theaters and sent audiences on another thrilling adventure with the world’s most daring archaeologist. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford as the iconic Indiana Jones, the film served as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark and introduced new characters including the spirited singer Willie Scott played by Cate Capshaw and the lovable Short Round portrayed by Jonathan Ke Quan.

The story took Indy to India where he uncovered a sinister cult and fought to free enslaved children while recovering a sacred stone. With its darker tone, intense action, and fast paced storytelling, the film stood apart from its predecessor but still captured the spirit of grand 80s adventure.

Fun fact: Despite its controversy and darker themes, Temple of Doom became the third highest grossing movie of 1984 behind Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters.
