On This Day: May 20, 1987 - Beverly Hills Cop II Premiered in Theaters
On this day May 20, 1987, Beverly Hills Cop II premiered in theaters and became one of the biggest box office hits of the year. Directed by Tony Scott, the film brought back Eddie Murphy as the fast talking Detroit detective Axel Foley. He reunited with Judge Reinhold and Ronny Cox while John Ashton returned as the tough but lovable Taggart.

Following the huge success of the original, the sequel leaned further into action while keeping its signature blend of comedy and detective thrills. Axel returns to Beverly Hills to investigate a new wave of violent crimes, delivering more one liners and explosive scenes.

The movie was a massive hit, grossing 300 million dollars worldwide on a 20 million dollar budget and solidifying Eddie Murphy’s status as one of Hollywood’s top stars of the 1980s.

Fun fact: Beverly Hills Cop II was the third highest grossing film of 1987 and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song with Shakedown by Bob Seger.
