On this day March 30 1988 Beetlejuice premiered in theaters and instantly became a cult classic. Directed by Tim Burton the supernatural comedy starred Alec Baldwin Geena Davis Winona Ryder Jeffrey Jones Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton in one of his most iconic roles.


The story followed a recently deceased couple trying to scare away the new family living in their home. When their efforts fail they turn to a chaotic and mischievous spirit named Beetlejuice whose methods quickly spiral out of control. Made on a $15 million budget the film was a box office hit earning $74.2 million and winning an Academy Award for Best Makeup. Its mix of comedy horror and Burton’s unique visual style made it one of the most memorable films of the 80s.

Fun fact: Michael Keaton only appears on screen for about 17 minutes but his wild performance as Beetlejuice became a defining moment in his career.
