On This Day: March 29 1983 Erno Rubik Received a Patent for the Rubik’s Cube
On this day March 29 1983 Erno Rubik was officially granted a patent for the Rubik’s Cube in the United States. Although the colorful 3D puzzle was invented in 1974 and originally called the Magic Cube it wouldn’t take long after the patent for it to become a full-blown international craze.

The Rubik’s Cube exploded in popularity throughout the 80s with millions sold around the world. It quickly became one of the most iconic toys of the decade and a symbol of brain-teasing fun that’s still going strong today.

Fun fact: Erno Rubik invented the cube as a teaching tool to help explain 3D geometry to his students in Hungary. He didn’t realize it could be scrambled until he tried to put it back together.

Trivia question: What was the original name of the Rubik’s Cube when it was first sold in Hungary?
