On This Day: March 24 1980 Flo Premiered on CBS
On this day March 24 1980 Flo premiered on CBS. The sitcom was a spinoff from the popular show Alice and starred Polly Holliday reprising her role as the sharp-tongued waitress Flo Castleberry. After leaving Mel’s Diner Flo returned to her Texas hometown and bought a roadhouse bar called Flo’s Yellow Rose.

The show ran for 2 seasons with a total of 29 episodes. While it didn’t match the long-running success of Alice it gave fans a closer look at one of the most memorable characters from the original series. Flo’s catchphrase kiss my grits became a pop culture staple of the early 80s.

Fun fact: Polly Holliday won two Golden Globe Awards for her role as Flo one during Alice and one after her spinoff premiered.

Trivia question: What was the name of the diner where Flo originally worked on the show Alice?
