On this day March 15 1989 the beloved musical Les Misérables opened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto marking the start of its highly successful Canadian run. The production brought the powerful story and iconic music of the legendary musical to a new audience solidifying its place as one of the greatest stage productions of all time.

Based on Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables had already taken the world by storm since its 1985 London premiere and 1987 Broadway debut. The Toronto production was a major success helping to further expand the show’s global legacy.
