On this day March 14 1980 LOT Flight 7 tragically crashed during its final approach near Warsaw Poland killing all 87 people on board. Among the victims was a 14-man American boxing team who were traveling to Poland for an international tournament.

The crash was caused by mechanical failure when one of the aircraft's engines broke apart mid-flight damaging vital controls. Despite the crew’s efforts to land safely the plane went down just short of the airport. The disaster was a devastating loss to both the aviation and sports communities.

Fun fact: The American boxing team on board included several promising young fighters many of whom were considered potential future Olympic athletes.
