On this day March 14 1980 LOT Flight 7 tragically crashed during its final approach near Warsaw Poland killing all 87 people on board. Among the victims was a 14 man American boxing team who were traveling to Poland for an international tournament.

The crash was caused by mechanical failure when one of the aircraft's engines broke apart mid flight damaging vital controls. Despite the crew’s efforts to land safely the plane went down just short of the airport. The disaster was a devastating loss to both the aviation and sports communities.

80s insight: The American boxing team on board included several promising young fighters many of whom were considered potential future Olympic athletes.
