On This Day: June 1, 1984 - Streets of Fire Premieres in Theaters
On this day June 1, 1984, the action rock musical Streets of Fire premiered in theaters. Directed by Walter Hill, the film starred Michael Paré, Diane Lane, E.G. Daily, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, Willem Dafoe, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, Richard Lawson, Rick Rossovich, and Bill Paxton. Set in a stylized urban landscape, the story followed a mercenary on a mission to rescue a kidnapped rock singer from a violent gang.

Produced on a budget of 14.5 million dollars, the film earned just 8.1 million at the box office. Despite its financial struggles, Streets of Fire gained a cult following over time for its unique blend of music, neon visuals, and 1950s meets 1980s atmosphere.

Fun fact: Streets of Fire featured an early breakout role for Willem Dafoe as the menacing gang leader Raven, dressed in black leather and becoming one of the film’s most memorable characters.
