On This Day July 26 1983 – Alpha by Asia Was Released
On this day July 26 1983, Asia released Alpha in the U.S., the band's second studio album and the follow up to their hugely successful self titled debut. After dominating the charts with hits like Heat of the Moment, expectations were incredibly high for the new release. The band responded with another polished collection of melodic rock that showcased their musicianship and knack for memorable hooks.

The album featured the hit single Don't Cry, along with songs like The Smile Has Left Your Eyes and True Colors. Once again featuring the lineup of John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, and Geoff Downes, Alpha blended progressive rock influences with radio friendly songwriting, helping the band remain one of the biggest names in rock during the early 1980s.

Although it didn't match the phenomenal sales of their debut, Alpha was a commercial success, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and earning platinum certification in the United States. It remains a favorite among fans of classic 80s rock.

80s insight: Asia demonstrated that accomplished progressive rock musicians could successfully adapt to the more accessible sound of the 1980s without sacrificing their musicianship. Alpha helped solidify the band's place among the decade's biggest rock acts.
