On This Day: April 11, 1986 - Off Beat Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 11, 1986, the comedy film Off Beat premiered in theaters, starring Judge Reinhold and Meg Tilly in a lighthearted story about a librarian who gets caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Directed by Michael Dinner, the movie blended romance, action, and goofy charm in true mid 80s style.

Judge Reinhold played Joe, a mild mannered New York librarian who’s roped into impersonating a cop for a charity dance event. Things take a turn when he ends up in a real police situation, working alongside actual officers and falling for officer Rachel Wareham, played by Meg Tilly. The supporting cast included Cleavant Derricks, Harvey Keitel, Joe Mantegna, and Amy Wright.

Despite a fun concept and solid cast, Off Beat didn’t click with audiences and only brought in 4.1 million at the box office on a 10 million dollar budget. Still, it remains a quirky entry in the long list of 80s comedies.

Fun fact: The movie’s promotional materials highlighted Judge Reinhold’s popularity after Beverly Hills Cop, hoping to ride the wave of his rising star power.

Trivia question: What actor starred as a librarian mistaken for a cop in the 1986 comedy Off Beat?
