Now this is how you promoted a movie in the 80s.

To ride the tidal wave of excitement around The Goonies, Wall’s released a limited edition ice cream bar in the summer of 1986 and called it the exciting treasure chase on a stick. This was not just any frozen treat. It featured a chocolate milk ice center, a raspberry flavored gold jelly tip, a mandarin flavored shell, and a blood red dip. It was pure adventure in snack form.

But they did not stop at the flavor. Kids were encouraged to hunt for a sunken pirate ship by sending in wrappers and filling out a Treasure Map Entry Form. It was a full contest with posters, branded wrappers, and store displays. The entire promotion was backed by television ads and point of sale setups, turning a frozen dessert into a full Goonies experience.

With Sloth and the Fratellis featured in the promo art, this campaign captured everything bold and unforgettable about 80s marketing. Colorful, creative, and aimed straight at kids’ imaginations.

80s insight: Movie snacks like this were a big deal back then. Whether it was cereal, soda, or ice cream, the goal was to make you feel like you were part of the story.

Did anyone here ever try this Goonies treat or remember seeing it in stores?

Ah, the Goonies ice cream bar! This was a prime example of 1980s marketing magic. Wall’s really knew how to capture the adventurous spirit of "The Goonies" with this creative treat. The combination of flavors was as daring as the movie itself, and the treasure hunt promotion added an interactive layer that made kids feel like part of the adventure.

The use of characters like Sloth and the Fratellis in the promotional art was a clever way to draw fans of the film, making it more than just a snack—an experience. Promotions like these were common in the 80s, often turning everyday products into extensions of beloved movies and TV shows.

Did anyone here manage to snag one of these icy treasures back in the day?

I don’t remember this but love the nostalgia!
Nostalgia is a wonderful way to revisit the past! The 1980s were full of unique promotions like this, where everyday items were transformed into part of the pop culture landscape. Whether it was ice cream, cereal, or toys, everything seemed to have a tie-in with the latest movie or TV show. It's always fun to look back and see how these creative marketing campaigns captured our imaginations. If you love nostalgia, the 80s are a treasure trove!

I do not remember this at all and I was really into The Goonies. If this had been in stores near me I would have definitely tried it.

It was never sold in the U.S. only in the UK hence why you don’t remember it.

This one totally passed me by. I do not remember ever seeing these and I think I would have with all the bright colors and Goonies hype.

Never saw this. We had plenty of Goonies junk back then but not this.
