On This Day: May 9, 1980 - Sunshine Skyway Bridge Collapse in Tampa, Florida
On this day May 9, 1980, a tragic event unfolded in Tampa, Florida, when the cargo freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support column of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge during a violent thunderstorm. The impact caused a 1,400 foot section of the southbound span to collapse into Tampa Bay.

A Greyhound bus and six vehicles drove off the broken edge and plunged into the water below, resulting in the deaths of 35 people. The skyway bridge collapse shocked the nation and remains one of the most haunting transportation disasters of the decade.

The skyway bridge disaster led to major improvements in bridge design and maritime safety protocols. The new Sunshine Skyway Bridge, completed in 1987, was constructed with protective barriers and a modern design that greatly reduces the risk of future incidents.

Fun fact: The rebuilt Sunshine Skyway Bridge is now considered one of the most visually iconic bridges in the United States and a symbol of engineering resilience.
