On this day May 7, 1986, Canadian mountaineer Patrick Morrow made history by becoming the first person to successfully climb the Seven Summits — the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. His achievement was completed with the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest of them all.
The Seven Summits include Mount Everest (Asia), Aconcagua (South America), Denali (North America), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Elbrus (Europe), Vinson (Antarctica), and Kosciuszko (Australia, based on the original Bass list). Morrow’s journey inspired climbers around the world and helped popularize the Seven Summits challenge as one of the great mountaineering feats.
