On This Day: May 21, 1982 - Queen Released Their Tenth Album Hot Space in the U.S.
On this day May 21, 1982, Queen released their tenth studio album Hot Space in the U.S. Prior to that it was released in the U.K. on May 4th.. The album marked a stylistic shift for the band, embracing dance, funk and disco influences that divided critics and fans at the time. It featured the international hit Under Pressure, a collaboration with David Bowie that became one of the band’s most iconic tracks.

While Hot Space peaked at number 22 on the US Billboard charts, it performed significantly better overseas. It reached number 1 in both Austria and the Netherlands and charted well throughout Europe. Despite its initial mixed reception, the album has since gained appreciation for its bold experimentation and production style.

Fun fact: Hot Space was the last Queen album released in Freddie Mercury’s lifetime that featured John Deacon’s active songwriting contributions.
