On this day May 11, 1984, The Natural premiered in theaters, bringing Bernard Malamud’s classic baseball novel to the big screen. Directed by Barry Levinson, the film starred Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs, a mysterious and gifted ballplayer who makes a miraculous comeback after a tragic past.

The cast included Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, and Barbara Hershey, and the film blended myth, Americana, and the magic of baseball into one of the most beloved sports dramas of the decade.

Fun fact: The Natural was made on a 28 million dollar budget and earned 47.9 million at the box office. Its iconic score by Randy Newman became one of the most recognizable in movie history and is still used today during baseball highlight reels.
