On This Day: May 1, 1987 - Malone Premieres in Theaters
On May 1, 1987, the action thriller Malone was released in theaters. Directed by Harley Cokeliss, the film starred Burt Reynolds as a former CIA operative who gets caught up in a battle against corruption and violence in a small rural town.

The strong supporting cast included Cliff Robertson, Cynthia Gibb, Lauren Hutton, Scott Wilson, and Kenneth McMillan. Despite Reynolds’ star power, Malone struggled at the box office, earning only 3 million dollars against a 10 million dollar budget. Over time, it has gained a bit of a cult following among fans of 80s action dramas.

Fun fact: Malone was based on the novel Shotgun by William P. Wingate but the movie’s story was significantly streamlined to focus more on Burt Reynolds’ action hero persona.
