On this day March 25 1983 the crime drama Bad Boys premiered in theaters. Directed by Rick Rosenthal the gritty film starred Sean Penn in one of his earliest leading roles alongside Esai Morales Ally Sheedy Eric Gurry Alan Ruck and Clancy Brown. The story followed a troubled teenager sent to a juvenile detention center after a violent crime. Inside he faces brutal conditions and a dangerous rivalry that tests his will to survive. Known for its raw realism and intense performances Bad Boys helped launch Sean Penn’s rise as a serious actor.

The film was made on a $5 million budget and earned $9.2 million at the box office. Its tough subject matter and powerful scenes left a lasting mark on 80s cinema.
