On this day March 21 1986 the comedy sequel Police Academy 3 Back in Training premiered in theaters. Directed by Jerry Paris the film brought back fan-favorite characters including Steve Guttenberg Bubba Smith David Graf Michael Winslow Marion Ramsey Leslie Easterbrook and Bobcat Goldthwait for another round of chaotic police cadet antics.

The story followed the original Police Academy graduates returning to help train a new group of recruits as their academy faced possible closure. Despite mixed reviews the film was a huge box office success grossing 107.6 million worldwide against a 12 million budget.

80s insight: Police Academy 3 was the first film in the series to be rated PG instead of R making it more family-friendly and helping it reach a wider audience.
