On This Day March 20 1987 - The Final Episode of Capitol Aired
On this day March 20 1987 the soap opera Capitol aired its final episode on CBS after a five-season run with 1293 episodes. The show centered around the political and personal struggles of two powerful families in Washington DC the Cleggs and the McCandlesses.

Capitol was known for its mix of romance intrigue and political drama but it faced challenges in ratings especially against competing soaps. When CBS canceled the series it was replaced by The Bold and the Beautiful which went on to become one of the most successful daytime dramas in history.

80s insight: Capitol was the last soap opera to premiere on CBS before the network shifted focus to its long-running staples like The Young and the Restless and As the World Turns.
