On this day March 2 1982 the comedy drama Diner was released in theaters. Directed by Barry Levinson the film featured an ensemble cast including Steve Guttenberg Daniel Stern Mickey Rourke Kevin Bacon Timothy Daly and Ellen Barkin. The film was a coming of age story set in 1959 following a group of childhood friends reuniting as they navigate the transition into adulthood.

Diner was praised for its natural dialogue and improvisational style making it feel authentic and relatable. The film focused on the conversations and personal struggles of its characters rather than a traditional plot. Many of its scenes took place in a Baltimore diner where the friends engaged in humorous and heartfelt discussions about life love and growing up.

The film had a budget of five million dollars and earned fourteen point one million at the box office. While it was not a massive commercial hit at the time it later became a cult classic and helped launch the careers of its young cast members. Barry Levinson’s direction and semi autobiographical script earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
