On This Day March 17 1982 - Herbie the Matchmaker Premiered on CBS
On this day March 17 1982 the short lived television series Herbie the Matchmaker premiered on CBS. The show was based on Disney’s beloved Herbie the Love Bug character and followed the adventures of the iconic Volkswagen Beetle as it helped people find love and happiness.

Despite the popularity of the Herbie film franchise the series struggled to find an audience and was canceled after just one season with only five episodes airing.

80s insight: Herbie the Matchmaker was part of an attempt to bring the famous Disney car to television following the success of The Love Bug films. The series was later reworked into a new version called Herbie the Love Bug in 1982 which also had a short run.
