Overview Discussion

On This Day March 11 1980 - United States Premiered on NBC
On this day March 11 1980 the short-lived drama series United States premiered on NBC. Starring Beau Bridges the series took a unique approach to storytelling focusing on the everyday struggles of a middle-class married couple in America.

Created by Larry Gelbart best known for his work on MASH the show aimed for a more realistic and introspective tone rather than the typical sitcom format of the time. Despite its innovative style and strong performances United States struggled to find an audience and was canceled after just 13 episodes.

80s insight: United States was one of the first TV shows to attempt a "dramedy" format blending serious themes with subtle humor paving the way for future series in the genre.
