On This Day: July 9, 1984 – The Time Released Their Third Album Ice Cream Castle
On this day July 9, 1984, The Time released their third studio album Ice Cream Castle, delivering a funky and energetic follow up that helped define their signature sound. Produced with heavy involvement from Prince under the pseudonym Jamie Starr, the album blended Minneapolis funk, new wave, and humor in a style that stood apart from anything else on the radio.

Ice Cream Castle featured two of the band’s most iconic tracks, Jungle Love and The Bird, both of which appeared in the film Purple Rain and helped introduce The Time to a much wider audience. Morris Day’s slick delivery and the band’s tight rhythm section made the album a standout in the summer of 1984, as it captured the vibe of Prince’s musical universe while standing firmly on its own. The album peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

80s insight: Ice Cream Castle showed how The Time brought humor, style, and pure funk to the heart of the 80s pop scene.
