On This Day February 16 1988 - Nada Como el Sol EP by Sting Released
On this day, February 16, 1988, Sting released Nada Como el Sol, a Spanish and Portuguese language EP featuring re-recorded tracks from his 1987 album ...Nothing Like the Sun. The EP showcased Sting’s interest in global music and culture, as he translated and performed select songs for international audiences.

The five track EP included Spanish and Portuguese versions of songs like Fragile, They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo), and Mariposa Libre (a reworking of Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix). By recording in multiple languages, Sting connected with a broader audience, particularly in Latin America and Portugal, where the EP received strong acclaim.

Though Nada Como el Sol wasn’t a major commercial release, it highlighted Sting’s versatility and willingness to experiment beyond the English-speaking music world. The project also reinforced his reputation as an artist deeply engaged with social and political issues, particularly in They Dance Alone, a song about the suffering of Chilean women under the Pinochet dictatorship.

80s insight: Nada Como el Sol was inspired by the success of Fragile in non English speaking countries, leading Sting to re-record several tracks to reach a wider global audience.
