On This Day: April 8, 1989 - The Look by Roxette Hit Number 1 in America
On this day April 8, 1989, The Look by Swedish pop rock duo Roxette became the number 1 song in America, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and kicking off a global wave of success for the group. With its catchy chorus, driving beat, and unforgettable attitude, the song stayed at number 1 in the US from April 8 through April 14.

The Look also climbed to the top of the charts in Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand. The song’s success was especially remarkable because it broke in the US before being officially promoted — an American exchange student brought the track from Sweden, and a radio station in Minneapolis started playing it. The buzz spread quickly and launched Roxette into international stardom.

The single’s blend of pop and rock energy, paired with Marie Fredriksson’s powerful vocals and Per Gessle’s songwriting, made The Look a defining hit of the late 80s.

Fun fact: The Look wasn’t even supposed to be a US single at first — it became a hit completely by accident after radio play from a bootleg cassette.

Trivia question: What duo recorded The Look and became international pop stars after the song hit number 1 in America?
