On This Day April 6 1981 - Post it Notes Went on Sale in America
On this day April 6, 1981, Post it Notes officially went on sale across the United States, becoming one of the most unexpected office supply success stories of all time. What started as a failed attempt to create a super strong adhesive at 3M turned into a revolutionary way to leave quick reminders, mark pages, and spark creativity.

The invention came from scientist Spencer Silver, who accidentally developed a low tack adhesive that could stick without leaving residue. His colleague Art Fry saw potential in using it to mark pages in his choir book without damaging them, and the idea for Post it Notes was born. After a limited release in a few cities proved popular, the product launched nationwide and quickly became a staple in offices, schools, and homes. Now recognized as a must have tool for organization and communication, Post it Notes are used by millions every day and have grown into a billion dollar brand.

80s insight: The original Post it Notes were only available in one color canary yellow because that was the color of scrap paper available in the lab.
