On This Day April 5 1987 - Married with Children Premiered on Fox
On this day April 5, 1987, Married with Children premiered on the newly launched Fox Network and instantly turned the family sitcom formula upside down. Starring Ed O’Neill as the bitter shoe salesman Al Bundy, the show introduced audiences to a hilariously dysfunctional household that was nothing like the squeaky clean families seen on other networks.

Running for 11 seasons with a total of 258 episodes, Married with Children became Fox’s first big hit and helped define the network’s identity as a place for bold, offbeat comedy. The show’s edgy humor, sarcastic tone, and over the top characters made it both controversial and beloved. Peg’s leopard print outfits, Bud’s schemes, Kelly’s cluelessness, and Al’s eternal misery became iconic parts of TV culture. The series paved the way for future sitcoms that weren’t afraid to push boundaries and mock the traditional family life that dominated television for decades.

80s insight: Married with Children was the first prime time show to air on the Fox Network, debuting on the same night the network launched.
