On This Day: April 22, 1983 - Exposed Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 22, 1983, the drama thriller Exposed premiered in theaters. Written and directed by James Toback, the film starred Nastassja Kinski as a young woman who leaves her small town life behind to become a successful model in New York. Along the way, she becomes involved with a mysterious violinist played by ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev and gets entangled in a dark web of terrorism and obsession.

Despite a high profile cast that also included Harvey Keitel, Ian McShane, and Bibi Andersson, the film struggled at the box office. With a budget of 18 million dollars, it only brought in 1.3 million, making it one of the biggest theatrical flops of the year.

Exposed was known for its stylistic direction and international locations, but critics were divided on its tone and pacing. Still, it remains a curious artifact of early 80s cinema that tried to blend high fashion, politics, and mystery.

Fun fact: Rudolf Nureyev, famous for his work as a ballet dancer, had never acted in a major film role before Exposed.

Trivia question: Which cast member of Exposed was internationally known as one of the most celebrated ballet dancers of the 20th century?
