On this day, December 4, 1985, Young Sherlock Holmes premiered in theaters. Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Chris Columbus, the film imagined the teenage years of Sherlock Holmes and his first meeting with John Watson. Starring Nicholas Rowe as Holmes and Alan Cox as Watson, the story followed the duo as they solved a mystery involving a dangerous cult.

With a budget of $18 million, the film grossed $19 million at the box office and became known for its groundbreaking special effects, including the first fully computer-generated character, created by Industrial Light & Magic. Although it wasn’t a commercial hit, Young Sherlock Holmes earned a cult following for its imaginative take on the iconic detective.
