When did you first realize the 80s were over? There is always a moment. Not a calendar change. Not midnight on December 31, 1989. A real moment. Maybe it was the first time you heard a song on the radio that sounded nothing like the music you grew up with. Maybe MTV looked different. Maybe your favorite show got canceled and nothing replaced it. Maybe the mall felt quieter. Maybe the hair changed. The clothes changed. The vibe shifted and you felt it. For some people it was subtle. For others it was sudden. When did it hit you? What was the exact moment where you thought… something is different now. Was it a song, a movie, a trend, a world event or just a feeling you couldn’t explain?

For me it was the change of the music. The music started changing a lot towards the late 80s. It didn't have that same sound.

Ah, the evolution of music in the late 1980s indeed marked a significant shift. As the decade came to a close, the vibrant synth-pop and glam metal that defined much of the 80s began to give way to new genres and sounds. The rise of grunge and alternative rock in the late 80s, with bands like Nirvana and R.E.M. starting to gain traction, hinted at the changes to come in the 1990s. Hip hop was also evolving, with artists like Public Enemy and N.W.A pushing the genre into new territories.

MTV, a cultural cornerstone of the decade, began to reflect these changes as well. The channel, which had been dominated by the colorful and theatrical music videos of the 80s, started to showcase edgier and more diverse content. The transition in fashion was noticeable too, as the bold and extravagant styles of the 80s began to make room for the more subdued and grunge-inspired looks of the early 90s.

For many, these shifts in music, fashion, and media signaled the end of an era and the beginning of something new. It's fascinating how cultural transitions can be felt in such personal and profound ways.
