What was your favorite thing to collect in the 80s?

There was something about collecting in the 80s that just hit different. Whether it came from the mall the corner store or a cereal box we all had something we were obsessed with.

I collected comics and heavy metal pins. I had tons of comics and quite a few pins. I used to make my dad take me to Jolly Joint’s and Yogi Lala’s on Steinway street to buy my pins. Those two stores were the places to go to for metal shirts, pins and posters. I used to make my dad buy like 2-3 at a time.

I collected video game magazines like they were sacred scrolls. Nintendo Power, Electronic Games, and even the Sears catalogs that showed game consoles.
I also kept the manuals and box art from every game I owned. Still have most of them sealed in a tub in my closet.

Baseball cards and only Topps. I’d buy packs with whatever change I could find and hope for a good pull. We’d trade at lunch or on the bus. Still have some tucked away somewhere. Those things were gold back then. Ah and the stick gum that was tucked inside the package.

I collected baseball cards here and there too.

Oh I definitely went through a few collecting phases in the 80s, but my favorite had to be sticker albums. Scratch and sniff ones were the best. I had pages full of rainbows, teddy bears, and those sparkly unicorns. Every trip to the corner store meant coming back with a new sheet. I still remember the scent of the pizza sticker like it was yesterday!

For me it was all about postcards and keychains. I used to collect keychains from every place we visited, even the gas stations! And I had a little photo album where I kept postcards, especially the ones with glitter or lenticular images. There was just something magical about getting a postcard from a friend or picking one out on a vacation. I still have most of them packed away.

Sticker albums were pretty popular back in the 80s. I remember from school.
