On this day August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255 tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan. The crash claimed the lives of 154 out of the 155 people on board, including all six crew members, and two people on the ground were also killed by the impact.

In a heartbreaking twist, the sole survivor of the crash was a 4-year-old girl named Cecelia Cichan. Her survival amid such overwhelming loss captured the attention of the world and remains a poignant memory of the disaster. Cecelia’s story is a powerful reminder of both the fragility of life and the resilience of the human spirit.
