On this day, January 8, 1989, the Broadway musical 42nd Street closed its doors at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City after an incredible 3,486 performances. Based on the 1933 film of the same name, this Tony Award-winning musical captured the glitz, glamour, and grit of showbiz with its story of an aspiring chorus girl who becomes a star.

The production, directed and choreographed by the legendary Gower Champion, originally opened in 1980 and became an instant hit, celebrated for its dazzling tap dance numbers and classic songs like We’re in the Money and Lullaby of Broadway. 42nd Street not only captivated audiences but also solidified its place as one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals.

Fun Fact: The opening night of 42nd Street in 1980 was bittersweet, as director Gower Champion passed away earlier that day. The announcement of his death during the curtain call added a poignant note to the show’s legacy.

Did you ever see 42nd Street during its original run? What’s your favorite Broadway musical of the 80s?
