On this day, December 8, 1982, The Verdict, directed by Sidney Lumet, premiered in theaters. Starring Paul Newman in one of his most celebrated performances, the film follows a down-and-out attorney who takes on a medical malpractice case in pursuit of redemption and justice.

With a budget of $16 million, The Verdict grossed $54 million and earned critical acclaim. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Newman and Best Picture. The film was later ranked #4 on the American Film Institute’s list of Greatest Courtroom Dramas and #75 on AFI’s Most Inspirational Films.
