On this day, December 17, 1989, The Simpsons premiered on Fox with its very first episode, “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.” This holiday-themed debut introduced viewers to the now-iconic Simpson family: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

Initially beginning as short segments on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, The Simpsons quickly evolved into a full series and has become the longest-running primetime animated show in history.
