On this day, October 23, 1987, The Sicilian, directed by Michael Cimino, premiered in theaters. Starring Christopher Lambert, Terence Stamp, and John Turturro, the film was based on the true story of Salvatore Giuliano, a Sicilian bandit fighting for his people’s rights. Despite a star-studded cast and a $16.5 million budget, the film underperformed at the box office, grossing only $5.4 million.
