On this day, October 22, 1981, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) union was officially decertified following an illegal strike earlier that year. The strike, which began in August 1981, was broken by the Reagan administration after the majority of PATCO members refused to return to work. PATCO had been active from 1968 until 1981, and its decertification marked a significant moment in U.S. labor history, as it sent a strong message about the power of the federal government in labor disputes.
