On this day, December 19, 1983, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy, known as the Jules Rimet Trophy, was stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil earned the right to keep the trophy permanently after winning their third World Cup title in 1970. However, in 1983, the iconic prize disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Despite an investigation, the trophy was never recovered and is believed to have been melted down by the thieves.

The loss of the Jules Rimet Trophy remains one of football’s greatest unsolved mysteries.
