Plot: The Burbs 1989 is one of the most underrated comedies of the decade. Directed by Joe Dante, the film follows suburban everyman Ray Peterson, played by Tom Hanks, who suspects something strange is going on at the house next door. As his curiosity turns into obsession, he and his neighbors begin spying on the mysterious new residents — the Klopeks — convinced they’re hiding a dark secret.

The Burbs mixes comedy, paranoia, and small town life into a smart and funny look at suburban boredom. It has a great cast that includes Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, and Corey Feldman. The film blends Hitchcock-inspired suspense with over the top humor, making it stand out among other 80s comedies.

Though not a huge hit when first released, the Burbs movie has grown a cult following over the years. Fans love its quirky characters, eerie soundtrack, and unique mix of horror and comedy. It’s also gained attention through repeated airings on cable TV and various home media releases.

If you like neighborhood comedies with a dark twist, or just want to see Tom Hanks in one of his most offbeat roles, the Burbs movie is a great pick. Whether you saw it back in 1989 or are discovering it now, it’s worth revisiting.

For the life of me I can’t understand why the Burbs is labeled as a horror. There is nothing in this movie that would suggest it’s a horror. It was a great movie but a horror? No way.
