On this day, December 7, 1985, the compilation album Sun City by Artists United Against Apartheid was released. Organized by Steven Van Zandt, the album brought together an all-star lineup of musicians to protest apartheid in South Africa and raise awareness about the oppressive regime.

The album’s title track, “Sun City,” featured artists like Bruce Springsteen, U2’s Bono, Peter Gabriel, Run-D.M.C., and Lou Reed, among others. The song was a powerful anthem condemning the South African resort that symbolized apartheid’s inequality. The album peaked at #31 on the Billboard charts and became a landmark in the fusion of music and activism.
