On this day September 6, 1985, Michael Jackson made headlines by purchasing the publishing rights to the majority of the Beatles’ catalog for $47 million. This bold business move gave Jackson control over some of the most iconic music ever created.

Did You Know?
Interestingly, Jackson had been in a bidding war against his friend and former Beatle, Paul McCartney. Ironically, it was McCartney who first shared the idea of purchasing the Beatles’ catalog with Jackson—only for Jackson to outbid him and secure the rights. This ultimately caused a rift between the two, and they were no longer friends afterward.
