On this day, October 22, 1983, two correctional officers were tragically killed by inmates at the Marion Penitentiary in Illinois. The violent incident led to a nationwide shift in prison security and the eventual development of supermax prisons, where inmates are kept in isolation for 23 hours a day. Marion Penitentiary became the first supermax prison in the United States, setting a new standard for high-security confinement.

Did you know?

The USP Marion in Illinois was the first supermax prison in the U.S., where inmates were isolated for 23 hours a day in their cells.

Do you remember hearing about this incident when it happened, or did you learn about supermax prisons later on?
